The 4-day, 3-night trip to “LangkaWEEE!” was our morale booster all through PMR. Chanting the name of that beautiful island and counting down the days to the trip instead of the days till PMR was a real comfort.
We, the Revolutionaries, are comprised of Cheryl Soh Zhixin, Cham Zhi Yi and Chang Jun Kit, the leader. After sending in a couple of captioned photographs, and a whole lot of praying, we managed to beat over a thousand entries sent in by teenagers within Malaysia and be one of the chosen fifteen teams to participate in the Sony Living With Nature Photography Camp 2008 held in Geopark, Langkawi.
18th October, we arrived in Langkawi just in time for dinner. Right after our meal, all participants gathered. An introduction of the members of the organizing team from Sony, Click! magazine and Malaysian Nature Society(MNS) was made. Later, there were presentations by MNS and Click! magazine. However, back into the dormitories we go, when rain started to pour heavily.
The next day, at 8 a.m, a troop of young photographers made their way to Mutiara Burau Bay Beach Resort. There, all of us settled down in a hall and were assigned to our facilitators. We were assigned to Chen Wee Ling, the Click! magazine photographer who carries one of the heaviest camera around and always has that gum chewed in her mouth. Next up, was equipment-check. Once done, we’re ready to set off on an adventure to Anak Burau.
Walking to Anak Burau is not an easy thing to do. With all the barnacle-covered rocks under one’s feet, one must be careful(Jun Kit and I both cut our heels). The MNS team led us, introducing us to aquatic creatures as we pass them by. High tide was coming in, and, so, we weren’t able to continue our journey to Anak Burau..
After lunch, it was time to trek through the mangrove swamps. While we’re on the beach I had a brilliant inspiration from Jun Kit’s new “So What?” bottle. I told him to take a picture of it laid down on the sand as if it’s washed ashore, symbolizing people’s attitude towards throwing little trash away. He loved the idea and his camera went clicking. Jun Kit stepped into quicksand, too. He’s white pair of sandals has turned brown. Cheryl, found herself snapping pictures of ants on the turquoise coloured curb on one of the lanes leading out of the hotel.
“Click! Click! Click!” went our cameras. Our slideshow went under construction that night…
On the third day, we asked for permission to stay back in the hall to build our slideshow instead of swamp-exploring as we had enough photos at hand. By 3.30p.m that day, we handed in our slideshow along with other teams and back to the dorm we went to practice our speech.
Cheryl and I presented that night. Cheryl started out. Firm and stable, she was. She did well. It was my cue. I was nervous and shaky but I managed to pull through, though immensely dissatisfied with my performance.
Day 4 – “Third prize goes to… Sekolah! Menengah! Kebangsaan! USJ 12!”
